The field of epigenetics involves the study of chromatin-based phenomena and heritable changes in gene expression not resulting from changes in gene structure or sequence. DNA is wrapped around an octamer of histone proteins to form chromatin, then packaged into chromosomes by other structural proteins. The organization of genetic material in the nucleus has profound effects on all processes that require access to DNA. Much of the regulation of the genome involves histone modifications (e.g. acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation) and DNA methylation at CpG islands that regulated a myriad of signals that are critical to cell function.
